On a sunny afternoon in May 1973, a mariachi band was playing to a festive crowd in the UC Santa Cruz Quarry Amphitheater when César Chávez, one of the leading social activists of his day, took to the stage. In what would be the first and largest of several campus rallies headlining Chávez and other United Farm Worker leaders, he thanked the hundreds of students and community workers who had helped with an ongoing campaign to improve the lives of farmworkers.
